IT media Business Insider reported on the 20th (local time) that artificial intelligence (AI) is bringing innovation to the legal industry.
AI models are becoming adept at interpreting and generating complex legal language, a core part of business, said Danielle Benecke, head of the machine learning practice at international law firm Baker McKenzie.
Founded in 1949, Baker McKenzie has more than 6,500 attorneys in 70 offices around the world. The law firm, which built generative AI to draft legislation for high volumes of employment law questions, recently won an award from Law.com.
Beneke said AI tools are particularly useful in dealing with the legal fallout from common issues such as cybersecurity incidents. The law firm's tools are also designed to provide accurate advice, she said, to significantly reduce the time lawyers spend navigating their clients' regulatory requirements.
“The peak of AI application in the next five to 10 years will be to empower lawyers,” said Cecilia Ziniti, CEO of GC AI. “AI is the lawyer’s co-pilot.”
It takes hundreds of hours of work as lawyers comb through documents to find relevant information, she told Geniti. This is an important task that can result in strict punishment and additional investigation, but it can also be repetitive, tedious, and time-consuming, and AI can do it for you.
Additionally, Jake Heller, head of CoCounsel product at Thomson Reuters, said, “AI will not replace lawyers.” Instead, AI can be seen as an extension of a trend that has its roots at the dawn of the computer age, he added.
